Your Heritage, My Heritage, Our Heritage Shines! Celebrating AAPI Month
Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month (AAPI Heritage Month) is an annual celebration that recognizes the intersectional contributions of individuals and groups of Asian and Pacific Islander descent to the United States. The AAPI umbrella term encompasses a wide range of cultures from the entire Asian continent, including East, Southeast, and South as well as the Pacific Islands of Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia.
May was similarly selected for its significance in commemorating the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants to the United States on May 7, 1843, and acknowledges Golden Spike Day, the anniversary of the transcontinental railroad completion. Throughout history, the community has been integral to advancements in a variety of fields, including science, medicine, literature, art, sports, leisure activities, governance, political movements, advocacy, and legal matters. In 2021, Kamala Harris became the first Asian American Vice President of the United States.
An excellent opportunity to honor the month's objective with your family while learning about the rich and diverse heritage of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders is by exploring the fascinating cultural traditions, customs, and history of this vibrant community. You can showcase your creativity by designing an original and personal rendition in the style of your favorite Asian American or Pacific Islander artist. You can also explore different Asian American and Pacific Islander cuisines and share recipes with your loved ones. Participate in virtual events and performances hosted by local Asian American and Pacific Islander organizations. In addition, visit museums showcasing AAPI art and history. Attend a local festival or market. Most of all, become familiar with the history of AAPI communities and have the whole family read books by Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders authors and illustrators.
