Celebrating Women’s History Month
According to a presidential proclamation, March is Women's History Month. The period celebrates women's contributions to history, culture, and society that are often overlooked in the United States' historical narrative. The timeline of women's history milestones stretches back to the founding of the United States, introducing brave pioneers like Harriet Tubman, Sylvia Mendez, and Amanda Gordon.
Historically, Women's History Month was developed from a weeklong celebration held by the school district of Sonoma, California, in 1978. Communities, educational institutions, and organizations across the country adopted the idea. Through Public Law 100-9, the United States Congress established National Women's History Month. The 2023 theme for the month is "Celebrating Women Who Tell Our Stories" and highlights "women from the past and present who have excelled in all forms of media and storytelling including print, radio, television, stage, screen, blogs, podcasts, news, and social media" (National Womens History Alliance, 2023).
By sharing stories of female role models and exposing our youth to a variety of experiences, girls and young women will be given the opportunity to see and experience their potential. Consequently, envision endless possibilities for the future!
